Spiritual guides and the cuadro espiritual

Learn how guides and spiritual courts are described in Espiritismo, and why they should not be confused with ancestors or Orisha.

SanteriaReligion.com Analysis

A relationship described within a tradition

In Spiritist contexts, a guide is understood as a spirit associated with guidance or assistance. Cuadro espiritual, often translated as spiritual court, refers to a person's spiritual relationships as described in that setting. These are religious understandings, not identities that a website can measure or assign.

Not every guide is an ancestor

A deceased relative, a religious predecessor and a guide describe different relationships. A practitioner may understand some of them as overlapping, but the categories are not automatically identical. Orisha should not be renamed as spirit guides because both may be associated with guidance.

Avoid assigning a guide from a dream, a favorite color, appearance, ethnicity or an online quiz. Historical imagery of spirit categories can also carry stereotypes. A person's dignity should not be reduced to costume, caricature or a supposed racial spiritual role.

Questions worth asking

Ask how an interpretation was reached, how uncertainty is handled, and whether you are free to disagree. A responsible conversation allows time and does not turn a claimed identity into an urgent purchase. Keep records of what you experienced separately from what someone told you it meant.

Learning about the idea of guides does not require accepting every claim made about your own life. You can study the vocabulary without commissioning an identification or agreeing to a ceremony.

The prayer to the spiritual court portrays guides, guardians and teachers as a source of counsel and correction. The decision-making prayer asks for integrity and responsibility in choosing a path. These are Miller’s devotional portrayals; they cannot identify a reader’s court or certify that a particular impression came from a guide.
