A public discussion about offerings to Orisha became a controversy over religious authority, spiritual freedom, and who controls the conversation. When I requested an explanation for my permanent ban, I was muted.

By Keith Lawrence Miller, M.A. | October 22, 2026

On October 20, 2026, Reddit user u/EniAcho opened a discussion in r/OrishaCommunity titled "Offerings?"

The subject was whether people who have not formally received Orisha should make offerings independently or bring those offerings through their godparents.

The author presented a personal understanding of Lukumí religious protocol and invited others to share their perspectives.

I accepted that invitation.

I respectfully challenged the idea that another human being should supervise every expression of devotion to Orisha.

On October 22, my account, u/SanteriaReligion, received a permanent ban from the community.

When I requested an explanation identifying the rule I had violated, the conversation subsequently displayed a notice that I had been muted.

The moderators did not identify an offending comment or provide a specific explanation in the messages I received.

That sequence raises questions extending well beyond one Reddit community.

When Religious Guidance Becomes a Question of Control

In the original discussion, u/EniAcho explained that an individual who has not received Orisha should ordinarily bring offerings to their godparent's consecrated Orisha.

The author questioned the practice of creating personal altars and independently bringing offerings into nature.

One example involved taking fruit and flowers to a river to honor Oshún. The author expressed uncertainty about whether this should be done without a godparent's supervision.

I disagreed.

My response began with the words:

"Godparents are not gatekeepers to Orisha."

I explained that individuals can honor Orisha, pray, express gratitude, and make respectful offerings.

I also acknowledged that receiving Orisha through established religious ceremonies provides a relationship that cannot be replicated simply by constructing a personal altar.

I recognized the legitimacy of godparents, their consecrated Orisha, and traditional ceremonial relationships.

What I challenged was the expansion of religious authority into the individual's freedom to approach the divine.

The ability to conduct religious ceremonies and the ability to express personal devotion are not identical forms of authority.

A godparent can teach someone how to make an offering. That does not establish that the godparent must approve every expression of gratitude.

The Response from u/EniAcho

The original author responded that I had misunderstood the argument.

u/EniAcho clarified that godparents were being described as facilitators of proper offerings rather than barriers to Orisha.

The response explained that the godparent's consecrated Orisha provides an established religious connection and that guidance helps protect inexperienced practitioners from mistakes.

The author also acknowledged that everyone can pray to Orisha and denied treating godchildren as dependent on human approval.

That clarification is important and deserves to be represented accurately.

Nevertheless, a substantive disagreement remained.

If an individual wishes to visit a river, pray to Oshún, express gratitude, and leave an offering, how much authority should a godparent exercise over that personal act?

Is guidance advisable? Certainly, in many circumstances.

Is experienced instruction valuable? Absolutely.

But should an individual believe that approaching Orisha independently is spiritually improper simply because another person has not supervised the encounter?

That is the premise I challenged.

Religious knowledge deserves respect. It does not follow that spiritual access must be supervised.

A Warning About Spirits Does Not Settle the Question

The discussion also introduced the possibility that independent offerings might attract other spirits, including deceptive or troublesome entities.

Such concerns exist within traditional religious teachings and deserve serious examination.

But invoking potential spiritual consequences does not, by itself, establish that all independent offerings are inappropriate.

The appropriate response to religious uncertainty is teaching and reasoned discussion.

This is precisely why communities devoted to religious education should welcome questions and differing interpretations.

Believers deserve opportunities to examine the reasoning behind religious practices, rather than being expected to accept every interpretation without discussion.

The Ban and the Silence That Followed

At 3:58 p.m. on October 22, r/OrishaCommunity permanently banned u/SanteriaReligion.

The automated notification stated that the account had violated community rules.

No specific offense was identified.

At 4:29 p.m., I replied respectfully, requesting the rule and the content involved.

I explained that the discussion had invited differing perspectives and that I had challenged a religious idea rather than attacking an individual.

The appeal thread then displayed a notice informing me that I had been muted by the subreddit.

The screenshots establish the permanent ban, my appeal, and the mute notice. They do not establish which moderator made the decision or whether my comments about godparents were the stated reason.

That missing explanation is central to the controversy.

If my comments violated a community rule, the moderators should be able to identify the violation.

If expressing a contrary religious interpretation was the problem, that raises a different and more troubling question about how the community handles dissent.

The Power to Control a Religious Narrative

Online moderators have considerable authority.

They can remove comments, restrict participation, and permanently exclude individuals from discussions.

That authority also enables them to shape what other members see.

Imagine a religious discussion in which a particular interpretation receives support while a competing perspective is excluded.

Someone encountering the remaining discussion may believe that the community has reached a broader consensus than actually exists.

Moderation can therefore influence public understanding, even when the moderators do not intend to manufacture agreement.

This matters especially in religious communities where participants seek spiritual guidance from people they perceive as experienced or authoritative.

An inexperienced reader may not know that there are differing teachings, practices, and interpretations across religious houses and lineages.

When religious disagreements are settled through exclusion rather than explanation, the public loses access to the reasoning necessary to evaluate competing ideas.

Whether that happened intentionally in this case remains unknown. The unexplained ban and mute nevertheless raise legitimate concerns about fairness and accountability.

No Human Being Owns Orisha

My position remains unchanged.

I respect godparents. I respect religious lineage. I respect the knowledge preserved through initiation and ceremonial practice.

I also reject the idea that any individual possesses exclusive authority over another person's spiritual relationship with Orisha.

Oshún is associated with the river.

Yemayá is associated with the ocean.

Eleguá is associated with the crossroads.

Our religion recognizes divine forces throughout nature. Consecration, initiation, and ceremonial practice carry religious significance, but the existence of Orisha is not dependent upon the authority of any particular human being.

For someone entering the tradition, guidance from an experienced elder can be invaluable.

That guidance should cultivate understanding, responsibility, and spiritual development.

It should never be confused with ownership of the divine.

When Spiritual Guidance Becomes a Business of Fear

One of the greatest challenges facing aleyos and newcomers to Santería/Lukumí is knowing whom to trust.

There are knowledgeable, ethical, and devoted godparents who preserve our traditions with sincerity. There are also individuals who exploit religious uncertainty, manufacture fear, and turn spiritual development into a continuing stream of financial transactions.

Newcomers need to recognize the warning signs.

If a potential godparent treats performing ceremonies as a full-time commercial enterprise, examine the financial incentives involved.

If every consultation leads to another expensive ceremony, another spiritual emergency, or another payment, recognize the pattern.

If someone repeatedly warns that terrible things will happen unless you purchase their spiritual services, recognize the manipulation.

If someone tells you that you cannot learn from other elders, read books, examine different teachings, or question their interpretations, recognize the attempt to control information.

And if an olorisha consistently lives in osogbo while promising to resolve everyone else's spiritual problems, I believe that deserves serious examination as well. Osogbo alone does not establish dishonesty or incompetence, but those claiming exceptional spiritual authority should be willing to discuss the relationship between their teachings, their conduct, and their own spiritual development.

A godparent should cultivate knowledge, confidence, and spiritual maturity in a godchild. Creating permanent dependency through fear serves an entirely different purpose.

Orisha sees everything.

I believe a person's life, choices, relationships, and conduct reveal much about the principles they practice.

I can speak from my own experience.

I own two homes, one of which is a mansion. I have the freedom to live and organize my time as I choose. My children are healthy. My wife remains an extraordinary partner after approximately twenty years of marriage. My personal Itá from both my crowning and knife ceremonies carries no osogbo.

These are blessings for which I am deeply grateful.

I have no need to manufacture spiritual fear to demonstrate the value of my relationship with Orisha.

And I challenge those who use greed, threats, manipulation, fraudulent claims, and fear to exploit believers to examine the lives they are living and the spiritual authority they claim.

What does their conduct reveal about the religious principles they profess?

The responsibility of religious leadership is enormous. An inexperienced person may place extraordinary trust in someone they believe speaks with spiritual knowledge and authority.

That trust should never become an opportunity for exploitation.

This is why open religious discussion matters. Newcomers should be exposed to different perspectives, encouraged to ask questions, and taught how to evaluate the people requesting their trust.

The godparent who fears an educated godchild should be questioned. The godparent who cultivates an educated godchild deserves respect.

No human being has exclusive ownership of Orisha, and no religious community should place its interpretations beyond examination.

The Questions That Remain Unanswered

I am publicly identifying r/OrishaCommunity and u/EniAcho because their published discussion provides the context for this controversy.

I am not claiming that u/EniAcho personally banned my account. The available record does not establish who was responsible.

The moderation team has yet to explain which rule justified the permanent ban, why permanent exclusion was proportionate, and why the appeal channel was subsequently closed to me.

Those are reasonable questions.

They are also questions the community's moderators are free to answer publicly.

If relevant evidence establishes that I violated a rule, I will examine it fairly.

Until then, the documented sequence stands.

A community member was invited into a discussion about religious practice. A contrary interpretation was expressed. A permanent ban followed. A request for clarification produced no substantive explanation in the available record, and the account was muted.

Orisha Cannot Be Silenced by a Moderator

This experience illustrates something far more important than my ability to participate in a particular Reddit community.

Religious freedom includes the freedom to ask questions.

It includes the freedom to disagree with interpretations of religious practice.

It includes the freedom to examine the influence of authority within spiritual communities.

Respect for elders and reverence for Orisha can coexist with independent thought.

I will continue advocating for religious education, open discussion, responsible spiritual mentorship, and the freedom of individuals to develop meaningful relationships with Orisha.

A Reddit moderator may control membership in a subreddit. That authority ends at the boundaries of the subreddit.

It does not extend to the river.

It does not extend to the ocean.

It does not extend to Orisha.

You can ban a religious perspective from your forum. You cannot ban its existence.

And no amount of online moderation changes that fundamental truth.

River meets ocean at sunset with the quote You can ban a religious perspective from your forum. You cannot ban its existence.
