Understanding the Sacred Life Force in Santería

When you begin to learn about Santería (Regla de Ocha / Lucumí), you will hear one word spoken constantly: Ashe. It is spoken as a blessing, agreed with as an "amen," and described as the ultimate goal of spiritual practice. But Ashe is not simply a greeting. It is the most fundamental concept in the religion.

Ashe Is the Power That Moves Through Creation

At its core, Ashe (also rendered Ase, Àṣẹ, or Axé) is the sacred life force. It is the divine energy breathed into the universe by Olodumare (God). Ashe is what makes a seed grow into a tree, what makes the wind blow, and what gives human beings the power to think, speak, and act. It is the breath of life. Without Ashe, nothing exists. Without Ashe, nothing changes.

In the Lucumí worldview, the universe is not dead matter. Everything—plants, stones, water, animals, and humans—contains a specific measure of Ashe. The religion of Santería is fundamentally about understanding, respecting, and aligning oneself with this natural and divine power.

Ashe Is Not Just Positive Energy

In modern Western spirituality, people often equate "energy" with "good vibes." Ashe is much more complex. Ashe is power, and power itself is neutral. Fire has Ashe—it can cook your food, or it can burn down your house. The ocean has Ashe—it can provide fish to sustain life, or it can rise in a destructive tsunami.

Because Ashe is pure force, it requires wisdom, respect, and proper boundaries to be guided in a way that creates health, stability, and peace (Iré) rather than chaos and misfortune (Osogbo).

The Spoken Word Carries Ashe

One of the most profound teachings in Santería is that the human voice possesses immense Ashe. Words are not empty; they are vehicles of power. When you speak, you are sending Ashe into the world to manifest reality.

This is why prayers (orikí), songs (suyeres), and incantations are so vital to the religion. It is also why elders constantly warn against speaking curses, wishing harm on others, or constantly complaining about one's own life. If you continuously speak defeat, your Ashe will manifest defeat. When practitioners say "Ashe" in response to a blessing, they are literally saying: "May the power to make it happen be so."

Ashe and the Orishas

The Orishas are divine emanations of Olodumare, and each holds dominion over specific manifestations of Ashe in nature and human life:

  • Elegguá holds the Ashe of the crossroads, choices, communication, and destiny. He opens and closes the doors of our lives.
  • Obatalá holds the Ashe of the mind, wisdom, peace, purity, and cool-headedness.
  • Yemayá holds the Ashe of the vast ocean, motherhood, profound protection, and the nurturing of life.
  • Changó holds the Ashe of thunder, fire, royal authority, justice, and the courage to face life's battles.
  • Ochún holds the Ashe of the sweet rivers, diplomacy, abundance, love, and the joy that makes life worth living.
  • Ogun holds the Ashe of iron, wilderness, relentless work, and the tools that build civilization.

Ashe and the Ancestors

Ashe is inherited. Before anyone can approach the Orishas, they must honor the Egun (ancestors). The blood, breath, and sacrifices of those who came before us created the foundation for our lives today. By acknowledging the Egun, we tap into a deep, ancestral well of Ashe that provides profound spiritual backing, protection, and guidance.

Ashe and Character

Having power means nothing if you lack the character to manage it. In the Lucumí and Yoruba traditions, the concept of Iwa Pele (gentle, good character) is inextricably linked to Ashe. A person with immense spiritual power but terrible character will eventually destroy themselves. Patience, honesty, respect, and humility are not just "nice" traits; they are protective vessels that preserve a person's Ashe and keep their life stable.

Ashe and Destiny

Every human being comes to Earth with a specific destiny chosen in heaven (associated with the Ori, or spiritual head). However, moving through life disconnected from your Ori diminishes your Ashe, leading to confusion, closed doors, and spiritual sickness. The practice of divination (such as Ifá or the Diloggún) exists to help individuals realign with their destiny, thereby unlocking their natural Ashe.

Ashe Is Why Santería Is Not Empty Ritual

To an outsider, the rituals of Santería might look like complex theatrical performances involving herbs, water, drums, and offerings. But within the religion, every element used in a ceremony is chosen specifically for its Ashe. A specific plant is not used because it "represents" Ochún; it is used because it literally contains the natural, cooling, sweet Ashe of Ochún. Rituals are the precise, ancient sciences of combining, directing, and harmonizing the Ashe of nature to heal, protect, or elevate a human being.

Can Ashe Be Increased?

Yes. A person's Ashe is not static; it fluctuates based on their behavior, environment, and spiritual alignment.

Ashe is strengthened through:

  • Cultivating good character (Iwa Pele)
  • Honoring and elevating ancestors
  • Respecting elders and spiritual lineage
  • Participating in proper ritual and receiving sacred alignments
  • Speaking truth and maintaining a cool head

Ashe is weakened through:

  • Harboring malice or uncontrolled anger
  • Disrespecting parents, elders, or the Orishas
  • Breaking spiritual taboos (ewos)
  • Engaging in destructive gossip
  • Lying, stealing, or living out of alignment with one's destiny

Why Ashe Matters Today

In a world that often feels chaotic, disconnected, and random, the concept of Ashe reminds us that everything is alive, connected, and vibrating with power. It teaches us that our words matter, our actions have energetic weight, and we are supported by divine forces and ancestors who want us to fulfill our highest destiny.

Final Thought

To say "Ashe" is to acknowledge the sacred power that moves the universe. It is to pray that this power aligns with you, heals you, and clears your roads. When we live with respect for the natural world, honor our ancestors, and cultivate good character, we become strong, radiant vessels for the divine force of life.
